BLACK LIVES MATTER

400 Years of Oppression

About 19 Africans were forced onto Dutch merchant ships which arrived at Jamestown and were sold to Virginia planters for slavery, in 1619. So, it's exactly been 401 years since the beginning of systematic racism, continuing even today in different ways. Many acts and bills were passed to provide equality and justice to the Black community, yet here we are in 2020 still having to fight for it, and instead of listening to us, we are being silenced, through various methods, clearly disrupting our constitutional rights. Amendments that address the legal equality of African Americans were passed in 1865, 1868, and 1870: 13th→ abolishes slavery 14th→ promises equal protection for all citizens regardless of race 15th→ assures voting rights for all citizens So legally every citizen regardless of their race was equal, but then why was it that many activists like MLK and Rosa Parks had to fight for justice. And why are we having to fight against racism to this day. Clearly, MLK’s dream is yet to be fulfilled.

How are they affected?

Many innocent lives got killed for driving, jogging, sleeping, wearing a hoodie at night, parking, babysitting, walking at night, selling CD’s, selling cigarettes, holding a cell phone, holding a toy gun, walking home with skittles, having a broken taillight, being homeless, shopping, sitting in a van, yelling, lying on the ground, breathing, and much more, only because of the color of their skin. This is just one aspect, but there is still a lot more that the Black community has to face in their day to day life.
